The Ailsa at Trump Turnberry

Ayrshire, Scotland

BY GARY LISBON

What began as a touch up with a handful of strategic improvements by architects Mackenzie & Ebert, grew into a comprehensive “re imagining” of the Ailsa course that opened in June 2016 to widespread acclaim. New length, greens and bunkering abound but it is the stretch along the coast from 4 to 11 that are ready to claim their place among the best in the game. The 4th has a new tee close to the sea with the green moved closer to the water. The 5th is a par five whose new green is placed beyond the old in a beautiful amphitheater of dunes. Nine is now one of the most striking 3 pars in the game played toward the iconic lighthouse across water and rocks. Ten is a par 5 arcing along the coast posing questions on every swing. Eleven may be the best of all, a 3 par played almost entirely over the rocks to a green that sits beside the beach.
