Muirfield
Gullane, Scotland
BY GARY LISBON
The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers was destined. It opened a 16 hole layout by Old Tom Morris in 1891 which was extended to 18 just in time to host its first Open Championship in 1892. Fifteen more Opens have been played here since along with eleven Amateur Championships. The club is found 20 miles east of Edinburgh in East Lothian after moves from Musselburgh and Leith where Muirfield was formed in 1744.
In 1923, renowned architect Harry Colt was consulted whose recommendations effectively produced the layout as it is today. He introduced 14 new holes with nines routed within the other in opposite directions. This way the golfer is never faced with the same wind direction on two consecutive holes. Many think of Muirfield as the fairest of all the Open venues, with few of the quirky bounces and hidden danger that links courses often contain. Fair chance that the 2013 Champion Golfer at Muirfield, Phil Mickelson, would agree.
