Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club

Lancashire, England

BY RUSSELL KIRK

Royal Lytham & St Annes is found on England's northwest coast among one of the most impressive collections of links courses on earth. With Royal Birkdale and Royal Liverpool to the south, this 35 mile stretch of the Lancashire Coast is home to three Open venues plus a sensational supporting cast including Wallasey, Formby, Southport & Ainsdale and Hillside. The course is unusual among the UK's links legends as it is located a half mile inland with no views of the sea and is surrounded by a neighborhood of red brick homes plus a railroad. Lytham is the only Open venue that begins with a three par and while relatively short it has been cussed in the same breath as Carnoustie primarily because it is a minefield of nearly 200 bunkers. The club has hosted The Open on eleven occasions most recently in 2012 won by Ernie Els. Lytham's first Open in 1926 was won by Bobby Jones whose spectacular approach to the 467-yard par four 17th with mashie sealed the win and earned him a plaque on the spot that remains today.
