St Andrews
Cruden Bay Golf Club
Aberdeenshire, Scotland
BY GARY LISBON
Cruden Bay is found two hours north of St Andrews along a twenty one mile stretch of on Scotland's east coast where you will also find Royal Aberdeen, Trump Scotland and some of the most dramatic dunes land in the world. Like many of Scotland's earliest clubs Cruden Bay was built by the railroads to compliment the hotels being built for the new tourism industry. There is credible claim that golf was played here in 1791 but practically speaking it was born as an Old Tom Morris design opened in 1899. The 1926 remodeling by Archie Simpson added length for the par 6,599 yard, par 70 course we play today ranked as GOLF Magazine's 79th best in the world. Cruden Bay winds its way in a figure of eight through towering dunes you won't find elsewhere in Scotland. The elevation changes are striking. Many of the holes are played secluded from one another but panoramic views of the sea are also enjoyed along with drivable par 4s, blind drives including a blind par 3!
