Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Southport, England

BY RUSSELL KIRK

Royal Birkdale is found on England’s northwest coast among one of the most impressive collections of links courses on earth. With Royal Lytham & St Annes just north of Birkdale and Royal Liverpool to the south, this 35 mile stretch of the Lancashire Coast is home to three Open venues plus a sensational supporting cast including Wallasey, Formby, Southport & Ainsdale and Hillside. The course was established in 1889 but it was the redesign in 1922 by Fred Hawtree (father of Martin Hawtree) and JH Taylor (five time Open champion and member of the Great Triumvirate) that produced the current layout which is recognized as one of the UK’s fairest because the fairways are flat which minimizes freak bounces plus the greens are in plain view and receptive to well played shots. Since first hosting The Open in 1954, the course alongside Royal Lytham has been the most regular venue for the Championship other than St Andrews. Royal Birkdale will host its 10th Open in 2017.
